INVEST will deliver tools to perform wise prioritization of investments in urban water infrastructure during the development of the programs of measures (PoM) requested by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). The project is performing the development of scientifically rigorous model-based and optimization approach which aids in the identification of relevant point source pressures (macro and microcontaminants) in EU river basins. Projects’ aim is to assess these points source pressures and to characterize their impacts on the water resource. These actions will directly support decision makers in selecting specific measures of investment in water infrastructure for river basins and water resource adaptation to global change. By means of emerging optimization techniques, INVEST will deliver the most cost-effective combination of water infrastructure upgrades for a given river basin. Furthermore, a new framework will be provided to define adaptive management strategies.

ICRA contribution to INVEST Project.

ICRA team tasks aims at providing decision-makers with modelling and optimization tools for the selection of measures to achieve good chemicals status in river basins, strengthening their resilience against global change. Three main scientific challenges are specifically addressed by ICRA in the  project: (i) the development of river basin models to assess the impacts of pressures on the chemical status of surface water bodies, (ii) the integration of global change predictions in these assessments, and (iii) the development of optimization tools which allow wise investments to be selected in an adaptive fashion.
