Despite the fact that antibiotic resistance has become a global public health concern, this phenomenon in environmental settings has not been fully explored. Recent studies suggest that antibiotic resistance found in clinical settings is intimately associated with the same mechanisms found in the environment. It is therefore necessary to understand the mechanisms and factors that promote antibiotic resistance. This project will explore the presence, diversity and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in bacteriophages from the environment. The results of this research are expected to provide critical insight into the role of bacteriophages as vehicles for antibiotic resistance determinants and provide new avenues to tackle the global crisis of antibiotic resistance.
