CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB

Job location:  ICRA – Catalan Institute for Water Research, Girona (Spain)

Number of positions available: 1

Expected start: October 2022

Temporal Position. The position is for 9 months (approximately)

Gross Annual Salary package: 24.000 € a 29.899 € based on the merits

 

OFFER DESCRIPTION

Research Area at ICRA: Technologies and Evaluation. Project: HYDROUSA – “Demonstration of water loops with innovative regenerative business models for the Mediterranean region” is a European project with a duration of 5 years (2018-2023). HYDROUSA will offer innovative nature based solutions based for the management of water in islands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean, for wastewater treatment, nutrients recovery and supplying fresh water from unconventional water sources. ICRA in the HYDROUSA project will analyse selected organic micropollutants compounds along the water cycle and in the edible part of selected vegetables (irrigated with reclaimed water). Additionally, bacterial antibiotic resistance in the soil will be evaluated to determine potential effects of wastewater fertigation. ICRA will evaluate the performance of the solutions, identifying the most adequate reuse train, apply environmental risk assessment and evaluate food safety issues. KEY DUTIES

The researcher will evaluate the most adequate water reuse train and theoretically replicate in other EU sites. The tasks of the project involve: a) Evaluation of the most adequate water reuse train, among HYDROUSA solutions, in terms of contaminant reduction (standard and organic micropollutants) based on project results from different WPs. b) Theoretical transferability and replication of HYDROUSA services in sites of Spain and Portugal, related to WP7 of HYDROUSA project c) Elaboration of project deliverable documents and other project documents. d) Support in pre-treatment, extraction, and analyses of samples for organic micropollutants analyses e) Participation in project meetings, writing of protocols, scientific reports, and scientific papers. f) As with all technicians, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows a small proportion of the time will be allocated to communal services such as joint laboratory maintenance etc.

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

 

Must have – Required

Research Field or Field of knowledge:

Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science or similar.

Qualifications and Education Level:

PhD in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science or similar.

Skills:

Communication skills (written and oral), organizational skills (focus, time management), teamwork and collaboration skills (dedication, participation, patience), computer and problem-solving skills.

Required Languages:

The researcher must be proficient in oral and written English; knowledge of the Spanish and Catalan languages is also positively evaluated.

Required Experience:

Proven experience in water and wastewater treatment technologies (e.g., constructed wetland, membrane bioreactors) and/or water reuse. Knowledge in the study of the fate of emerging organic pollutants in water and other matrices.

 

Desirable

Any of the following past research experiences will be judged favourably in the selection process:

  • Experience in laboratory and/or field studies and measurement campaigns.
  • Knowledge/experience on environmental and analytical chemistry, particularly in mass spectrometry, coupled to LC for the determination of organic pollutants in environmental sample.
  • Experience in platform presentations and in paper/reports elaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; she/he must be creative, flexible, and eager to learn and to expand his /her scientific network.
