FOR THE FIRST TIME AN ECONOMIC QUANTIFICATION OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES ARE DONE IN THE LLOBREGAT RIVER BASIN
Ecosystem services are the benefits that man get thanks to the natural functioning of ecosystems (clean water, wood, food...)
Ecosystem services provided by the Llobregat river basin can be valued in almost € 1,000M per year. This is the conclusion of an interdisciplinary study from the Resources and Ecosystems Research Area at ICRA, within the framework of SCARCE project.
The singularity of the study, which for the first time quantifies in economic terms ecosystem services provided by a river basin from the Iberian Peninsula, makes it a reference for water managers in Spain and Southern Europe.
