We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for the development of chemometric tools for the detection of different compounds in waters matrices, including underground water, drinking water and wastewater. The PhD is in the framework of the Industrial Doctorates Plan co-funded by the Catalan Government. The PhD will be carried out in a collaboration between the company, s::can Iberia Sistemas de Medición S.L.U (part of the s::can group http://www.s-can.at/) and a research centre ICRA, Catalan Institute for Water Research, http://www.icra.cat/ . This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly innovative environment that combines the academic supervision of the thesis with the mentoring of the company s::can Iberia as part of an employment contract. The position is for three years.

The academic supervisors of the position are Dr Oriol Gutierrez and Dr Wolfgang Gernjak (both ICRA) and the industry supervisor is Dr Jordi Raich (s::can Iberia Sistemas de Medición S.L.U.).
DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMOMETRIC TOOLS FOR THE DETECTION OF DIFFERENT COMPOUNDS AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW INDICES IN WATER MATRICES
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater) that take place worldwide. Environmental degradation take place when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. The specific contaminants leading to pollution in water include a wide spectrum of compounds (organic, inorganic, pathogens, etc.). Thus there is a need to develop tools for the accurate, reliable and fast detection of the maximum number of these compounds in order to monitor and attenuate its effects. Spectrophotometry and chemometry have been widely used for the quantification of pollutants in water matrices, however there is a need to improve current instruments and techniques to increase number of detectable compounds and simultaneously reduce the limits of detection. In addition to it, continuous on-line monitoring of water matrix in a DWTP or WWTP allows the operator to improve the different treatments of the plant. However, this is still based on single parameters. Therefore, new indices based on UV-VIS spectrophotometry are intended to be developed.

Position: Industrial PhD
Expected start: May-July 2017
The position is for 36 months.
Gross salary package: 22.000 €/year.
The position will be mostly focused on developing chemometric tools for the extraction of information from UV-Vis spectrum (200-750nm) obtained from different water matrices monitored by using submersible spectrophotometers and also carry out data analysis. The position will closely interact with s::can and ICRA supervisors and personnel. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to
Collection and compilation of experimental and field monitoring data.
Development of chemometric tools for quantitative and qualitative analysis of contamination based on a variety of statistical and calculation techniques
Transformation of models developed and programming into s::can software
Data analysis, including written and oral reporting on results including the edition of scientific publications
Relevant scientific bachelor and master degrees (chemistry, environmental sciences, chemical engineering) that qualify the candidate to enrol into a PhD programme at the time of commencement of the position.
Average mark of 6.5 or higher (scale 1 to 10) on the academic transcript, calculated based on all credits of university studies. Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) will be available to assist in the calculation of the average mark, if necessary.
High level in English.
Knowledge of Catalan and/or Spanish.
Car driving license that is valid in Spain .(or can easily be validated)
Knowledge and Skills
Water and wastewater engineering systems.
Understanding of water chemistry and water quality.
Chemometric or other statistical tools such as principal component analysis, multivariate regression, pattern recognition techniques etc;
A good understanding of Occupational Health & Safety and Hazard Operations in water engineering.
Practical knowledge and skills in a technical environment (laboratory and field), in particular in science and/or engineering disciplines.
Use of programming languages
Experience with data analysis and critical assessment of analytical procedures.
On-line monitoring and sensing applications
Experience in writing scientific/technical reports and user-friendly manuals/notes to document procedures and operating instructions.
Experience in liaising and collaborating with clients / partners.
Experience with field work such as water sampling and filtration, and water quality measurement with multiprobes.
Experience with maintenance and calibration of general laboratory and field equipment, and ability to train users.
Good communication and organisational skills and the ability to meet objectives within set deadlines.
Ability to perform multitasking and run them in parallel under good results basis
Ability to work effectively and independently with limited supervision, and as a member of a team.
Self-motivated and ability to resolve issues using own initiative.
Ability to efficiently learn new skills and gain knowledge within the scope of the position.
Ability to attend to detail.
