FIRST INTERCONTINENTAL STUDY ON TEMPORARY RIVERS

Researchers of the Catalan Institute for Water Research lead an international team of researchers that have published on March 7, 2014 a scientific paper in the journal Science ( vol.343 ) which demonstrated that temporary rivers , that is, those that remain dry during part of the year, have high ecological and economic values , but they are managing accordingly , and in many cases their preservation is at stake , both in the European Union, as Australia, or the United States .

Researchers conduct an analysis of the environmental legislation related to these aquatic ecosystems in three continents mentioned above, have identified weaknesses with respect to legislation and management, and made a series of proposals based on current scientific knowledge to improve their management and conservation .

Authors of publication : Vicenç Acuña , Sergi Sabater and Damià Barceló all of them of the Catalan Institute for Water Research ( ICRA Girona) , Antonio Ginebreda from the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Studies ( CSIC- IDAEA , Barcelona) , Cliff Dahm , University of New Mexico ( UNM , Albuquerque ) , Margaret Palmer of the University of Maryland ( Annapolis ) , Glen McGregor and Jon Marshall of the Australian Rivers Institute ( ARI , Brisbane ) , Thibault Datry the National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture ( IRSTEA ) and Klement Tockner the Leibniz - Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries ( IGB , Berlin ) .
