ICRA IS STUDYING THE CHEMICAL FATE OF PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOUNDS IN AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT-RIVER

ICRA’s researchers of the Resources and Ecosystems, Water Quality and Technology and Evaluation research areas, conducted a study in an integrated system waste water treatment plant – river, aiming to characterize the chemical fate of pharmaceutical compounds and their metabolites, tracking a water mass from its entrance to the waste water treatment plant, the different compartments within, its entrance to the river through the effluent and in a section of 5km. The study site is the waste water treatment plant of Puigcerdà and a 5km river section at the Segre River, which were sampled during 4 days and every 4 hours for the analysis of pharmaceuticals comnpounds such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac and Venlafaxine.

On the other hand, the accumulation of these compounds on different biological compartments such as biofilm or invertebrates was characterized. Furthermore, the potential toxicity of these compounds was evaluated.

All collected data will be analyzed and draws conclusions might help to better resource management.

This study was carried out in the framework of European projects such as: EcoMaWat and GWESCB and projects of the Spanish Ministry as CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 SCARCE and ENDERUS.
