CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB

  • Expected start: November 2019
  • Temporal Position. The position is for 12 Months (Approximately, can be extended subject to positive evaluation)
  • Gross Annual Salary package: 16.127,59 €

 

JOB PURPOSE / PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We offer a Research Technician position to work under the supervision of Dr. Maria José Farré and Dr. Carles Borrego in the Area of Water Quality and involving both, analytical chemistry and toxicology. The person will work in a project aiming to investigate the fate and removal of nitrogen containing disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors in drinking water treatment.

Technologies under study will mainly include disinfection by ozonation, chlorine dioxide, chlorine and potassium permanganate whereas N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) will be the main target DBP. We will apply target analysis to monitor the removal of DBP precursors and employ high resolution mass spectrometry to investigate the changes in the water matrix.

The work will also include bioassays to investigate the potential toxicity of transformation by-products on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic model organisms.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To conduct experiments to achieve the above-mentioned objectives and to interpret results

To contribute in tasks to publish the work in peer-review scientific journals with impact factor > 5.

A small proportion of the time will be allocated to communal services (e.g. joint laboratory maintenance).

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & SELECTION CRITERIA

Must Have – Required

Experience:

Candidates must have a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Engineering or related fields, and a Master degree in Water or Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Wastewater Treatment or related fields. Academic record of average mark higher than 2 (scale 1-4) or 7 (scale 1-10).

Knowledge:

Fluency in English with good oral and writing communication skills is essential. Fluency in Catalan and/or Spanish will also be considered.

Skills:

Analytical chemistry, sample preparation, sample extraction, basic microbiological and biochemical skills, chromatography, water quality knowledge, multivariate statistics.

Any of the following past research experiences will be judged favourably in the selection process:

  • Analytical chemistry (HRMS-orbitrap), specifically non-target analysis
  • Data mining
  • Literacy on Matlab and/or R software
  • Fate of Contaminants of Emerging Concern and or Disinfection by-products
  • Characterization of dissolved organic matter

Desirable

Interest to pursue a PhD degree in Drinking Water Quality
